Christ on the Mount of Olives

Pietro della Vecchia was a Venetian painter of the mid-seventeenth century who specialised in eclectic work blending Giorgionesque tradition with contemporary Baroque drama. The Agony in the Garden — Christ's prayer on the Mount of Olives before his arrest — was a subject that allowed painters to explore themes of solitary suffering and divine illumination. Della Vecchia's version reflects his characteristic interest in night-lit scenes with strong tonal contrast.

The nocturnal setting is pierced by a beam of celestial light that isolates Christ's figure against a deep blue-black sky. Della Vecchia's handling of the sleeping apostles in shadow demonstrates confident chiaroscuro modelling. The angel bearing the cup is rendered with a softness that contrasts the harder planes of the rocky terrain.
