The White Sail

The White Sail, also at Museum Barberini, is another of the 1906 coastal scenes Dufy produced during his Fauve period. A single sail becomes the visual pivot of a composition dominated by sea and sky—a motif that allows maximum chromatic experimentation with minimal narrative. The white of the sail functions as neutral punctuation against the blues and greens of the water, creating tonal contrast that organizes an otherwise non-hierarchical color field.

The sail is rendered as an area of near-white with pale grey shadows, placed centrally amid strokes of saturated blue and green representing water and sky. Dufy uses broken, directional marks to suggest wind and movement across the sea's surface, the brushwork becoming the primary carrier of kinetic energy in the composition.
