Crucifixion by Andrea Previtali

Crucifixion

Andrea Previtali·1517

Historical Context

Andrea Previtali painted this Crucifixion around 1517 for the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. Though best known for his gentle Madonnas, Previtali also produced Passion subjects that brought Bellini's contemplative approach to the more dramatic imagery of Christ's suffering The Crucifixion was among the most theologically central and emotionally charged subjects in Christian art, intended to move viewers to compassionate meditation on Christ's sacrifice.

Technical Analysis

The panel shows Previtali's refined Bellinesque technique applied to a Passion subject, with atmospheric landscape setting and the restrained emotional expression characteristic of Venetian devotional painting.
