Saint Anthony of Padua by El Greco

Saint Anthony of Padua

El Greco·1580

Historical Context

Saint Anthony of Padua (c. 1580) in the Prado depicts the popular Franciscan preacher holding the Christ Child — his most distinctive iconographic attribute, referencing his mystical vision during prayer. Anthony, born in Lisbon but Italian by adoption and burial, was one of the most venerated saints in the Catholic world and the subject of constant devotional demand from churches and private patrons. El Greco renders him with the elongated proportions of his mature style, the brown habit and the luminous Child creating a striking color contrast. The warmth and directness of the saint's expression is characteristic of El Greco's ability to make theological abstractions feel personally present.

Technical Analysis

The contemplative saint holding the Christ Child is rendered with El Greco's characteristic elongation and silvery palette, the spiritual intensity conveyed through the upward gaze and luminous flesh tones.
