Temptation of Saint Jerome
Historical Context
Also part of the Guadalupe monastery decoration, this Temptation of Saint Jerome (c. 1640) depicts the Church Father resisting worldly temptation in the desert. The subject pairs with the Flagellation scene, together illustrating Jerome's spiritual purification through trial. Zurbarán's austere, powerfully meditative style—white-robed monks in intense chiaroscuro, saints presented against dark backgrounds with sculptural solidity—made him the ideal painter for the Counter-Reformation religious orders of Extremadura and Seville.
Technical Analysis
The desert setting is rendered with sparse, austere tones that complement the ascetic subject. Jerome's aged body is modeled with unflinching naturalism, while tempting figures receive a more theatrical treatment.
