Die Heiligen Margareta und Ottilia
Meister von Veringen·1505
Historical Context
The Meister von Veringen painted Saints Margaret and Ottilia around 1505 for the Wurth Collection. These female saints were particularly venerated in the Upper Rhine and Swabian regions: Margaret as protector during childbirth, Ottilia as patron of Alsace and healer of eye diseases. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
The panel presents both female saints with their traditional attributes in the characteristic Upper Swabian manner with bright colors and precise linear drawing.
