Painted in 1948, this work exemplifies Dufy's distinctive mature style: the separation of drawing from color — black calligraphic outlines floating over broad, freely applied washes of brilliant hue. Beginning as a Fauve painter under the influence of Matisse, he developed toward a lighter, more decorative approach ideally suited to textiles, ceramics, and large-scale decorative commissions alongside his easel painting.
