Happy Lovers
Historical Context
Happy Lovers from around 1760 depicts a joyful amorous couple in the pastoral mode that Fragonard inherited from Watteau and Boucher. Such idealized depictions of romantic love in garden settings embodied the Rococo spirit that would be swept away by the Revolution and Neoclassical severity. The bravura brushwork—rapid, swirling strokes building luminous effects—was applied alla prima onto canvas primed with warm ochre grounds, a technique Fragonard developed after studying Tiepolo in Venice.
Technical Analysis
The composition unites the couple in a dynamic diagonal arrangement within a lush landscape. Fragonard's characteristic warm palette and fluid brushwork create an atmosphere of spontaneous joy.
