Frauenbildnis
Franz von Lenbach·1902
Historical Context
Frauenbildnis (Portrait of a Woman) by Franz von Lenbach, dated 1902 and held at the Munich Central Collecting Point prior to repatriation, is an unidentified female subject from his final years — one of many such portraits of Munich's bourgeois society that sustained his studio practice through his late career. Although specific identification is currently impossible, the work belongs to the broad context of Lenbach's portrait output from the Wilhelmine era: respectable, psychologically attentive, technically accomplished within the tonal-academic framework he never abandoned.
Technical Analysis
Lenbach applies his usual portrait approach: careful glazed modelling in the face, a dark indeterminate background that focuses all attention on the subject's features and expression. The technique is extremely refined, the layers of transparent colour building up a warmth and depth that younger, more direct painters found old-fashioned but his clients still valued.
