Oswald Achenbach was the preeminent German painter of Italian landscape, spending decades in the country and developing a vivid, theatrical response to its light, coastal drama, and atmospheric storms. A Storm over an Italian Landscape (1873) exemplifies his mature approach — dramatic skies, turbulent weather, and Mediterranean scenery combined into compositions of genuine emotional power. While younger artists were moving toward plein-air naturalism, Achenbach continued to work in the grand Düsseldorf tradition of studio-composed landscape, but with a more expressive, gestural paint handling than his predecessors.

Achenbach deploys a wide tonal range from deep storm-shadow to bright flashes of light breaking through cloud, exploiting the theatrical contrast to maximum dramatic effect. His brushwork becomes increasingly free in the sky, with loaded strokes conveying turbulent cloud movement, while the landscape below is rendered with more deliberate structural detail.
