the blindman´s - buff
Historical Context
This Blind Man's Buff scene, recovered from the Munich Central Collecting Point, depicts the popular parlor game that was a staple of Rococo iconography. The game's combination of physical intimacy and playful deception made it a natural vehicle for exploring themes of desire and concealment. The bravura brushwork—rapid, swirling strokes building luminous effects—was applied alla prima onto canvas primed with warm ochre grounds, a technique Fragonard developed after studying Tiepolo in Venice.
Technical Analysis
The dynamic figure arrangement captures the game's swirling movement, with Fragonard using loose, energetic brushwork to convey the players' animated interaction.
