Madonna with child
Historical Context
Neroccio di Bartolomeo de' Landi was a Sienese painter and sculptor active in the late fifteenth century who developed one of the most distinctive styles in the city's artistic tradition. This Madonna with Child reflects his characteristic elongated figures and delicate, almost ethereal beauty that represented the last flowering of the Sienese Gothic tradition. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows Neroccio's signature linear elegance and pale, luminous palette, with elongated proportions and refined features that give his Madonnas a distinctive otherworldly grace quite different from contemporary Florentine naturalism.
