Three men in an inn.
Simony Jensen·1902
Historical Context
Three Men in an Inn by Simony Jensen, dated 1902, situates three male figures in the social setting of the inn — drinking, conversation, companionship — that was a defining subject of Northern European genre painting from the Dutch Golden Age through to Jensen's contemporaries. The inn as subject combined the pleasures of observing male sociability with the technical challenge of depicting interior lamplight and the varied physiognomies of diverse men gathered in one place. Jensen, working consciously in the Flemish-Dutch tradition, treated the inn interior with the same warm-toned, observational approach he brought to all his genre subjects.
Technical Analysis
Jensen builds the interior from warm lamplight and shadow, the three men's faces catching the light with varying degrees of directness as they occupy different positions relative to the light source. The handling of the interior materials — wooden table, tankards, the varied textures of clothing — shows his careful attention to the physical reality of the space.
