Apostles Philip and James the Elder
Historical Context
This panel depicting Apostles Philip and James the Elder belongs to the front face of Duccio's Maestà altarpiece (1308–1311), where the twelve apostles were arranged flanking the central enthroned Virgin. Each apostle was individually characterized through physiognomy, gesture, and attribute, demonstrating Duccio's subtle approach to figural differentiation. Now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Siena, this panel preserves one pair from the greatest ensemble of sacred figure painting produced in early 14th-century Italy.
Technical Analysis
Egg tempera and gold on poplar panel with Duccio's refined modeling technique using layered glazes over green earth underpaint. The apostles are distinguished by individualized facial features and varied drapery colors, set against the continuous gold ground of the Maestà's front register.
