Baptism of Christ
Gentile da Fabriano·1425
Historical Context
Gentile da Fabriano painted this Baptism of Christ around 1425, during his final years working in Rome for Pope Martin V. The commission placed him at the center of papal artistic patronage, though much of his Roman work was later destroyed or lost, making surviving pieces from this period especially significant. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays sumptuous gold and jewel-like color, elegant courtly figures in elaborate brocade, lyrical narrative, exquisite surface detail in goldwork and textiles.
Technical Analysis
The composition displays Gentile's mastery of narrative clarity and elegant figural arrangement, with refined color harmonies characteristic of late International Gothic panel painting.
