Christ Before Annas (top); Peter Denying Jesus (bottom)
Historical Context
Duccio di Buoninsegna's Christ Before Annas and Peter Denying Jesus panels from the Maestà depict simultaneous events from the night of Christ's arrest: his interrogation before the high priest while in another courtyard Peter denies knowing him. These paired scenes, showing loyalty and betrayal occurring simultaneously in different spaces, demonstrate Duccio's sophisticated understanding of narrative time and psychological contrast. Peter's denial — the warmth-seeking gesture by the fire, the cockerel's crow, the remembered prophecy — was among the most humanly vulnerable moments in the entire Passion narrative.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera and gold leaf on poplar panel, the two scenes are set within architectural interiors that create receding spatial depth. Duccio's refined technique employs subtle tonal modeling and expressive hand gestures to convey the emotional tension of the trial narrative.
