Christ before Pilate Again (top); Christ Before Herod (bottom)
Historical Context
This double-register panel showing Christ Before Pilate Again above and Christ Before Herod below is part of the extensive Passion cycle on the reverse of Duccio's Maestà altarpiece, completed for Siena Cathedral around 1308-1311. These trial scenes, in which Christ is shuttled between Roman and Jewish authorities, were essential to medieval Passion narratives and carried deep theological meaning about the nature of divine and earthly justice. Duccio's treatment of these courtroom dramas demonstrates his sophisticated narrative abilities.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera and gold on panel, the two trial scenes feature elaborate architectural settings with Gothic thrones and judicial spaces that frame the dramatic confrontations. Duccio employs a subtle palette and varied figural poses to differentiate the two scenes, with Christ's calm dignity providing a visual anchor amid the surrounding figures.
