Flagellation (top); Christ Crowned with Thorns (bottom)
Historical Context
This double-register panel of the Flagellation and Christ Crowned with Thorns belongs to the Passion cycle on the reverse of Duccio's Maestà, the monumental altarpiece completed around 1311 for Siena Cathedral. These scenes of physical torment represent some of the most emotionally intense episodes in the cycle, and Duccio's treatment of Christ's suffering set new standards for devotional imagery that influenced generations of Sienese and Italian painters.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera and gold leaf on poplar panel, the scenes are set within architectural interiors that create defined spatial stages for the violent action. Duccio's restrained yet deeply affecting figural rendering conveys Christ's dignity amid suffering through subtle compositional means and controlled emotional expression.
