Jesus Appears on Lake Tiberias
Historical Context
This panel depicting Christ's appearance on Lake Tiberias is part of Duccio di Buoninsegna's monumental Maestà altarpiece, commissioned by the city of Siena for its cathedral in 1308 and completed by 1311. The Maestà was the most ambitious and costly altarpiece of its era, with narrative scenes from Christ's life arranged on the reverse. This post-Resurrection episode, recounting the miraculous catch of fish from the Gospel of John, was among the final scenes in Duccio's christological cycle.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera and gold on panel, this scene demonstrates Duccio's innovative approach to spatial recession through the diagonal placement of the boat on the lake. The figures display the refined Sienese linear style with soft color transitions and expressive gesture.
