St Peter Blessing and Donor

Bartolomeo Montagna was the leading painter of Vicenza, where he established a distinctive style combining the influences of Giovanni Bellini, Mantegna, and Antonello da Messina. This Saint Peter Blessing and Donor panel, dated around 1505, in the Gallerie dell'Accademia, reflects the patron-saint devotional format common in the Venetian terraferma. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.

The panel demonstrates Montagna's characteristic firm, sculptural modeling of drapery and his strong architectural sense, with the precise drawing and sober palette that distinguished his Vicentine workshop from the softer Venetian manner.
