Saint Christopher
Historical Context
The Master of the Embroidered Foliage was a Netherlandish painter active around 1490-1510, named for the distinctive plant patterns in his backgrounds. This Saint Christopher in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister reflects the widespread cult of this popular saint, believed to protect travelers from sudden death. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The panel features the artist's namesake decorative foliage patterns woven into the landscape background, with the monumental figure of the saint rendered in the detailed Netherlandish oil technique characteristic of the Brussels-Antwerp school.
