Saint Jerome in the desert
Jacopo Bellini·1500
Historical Context
Jacopo Bellini, the patriarch of the great Bellini painting dynasty of Venice, created this Saint Jerome in the Desert around 1500. Now in the Castelvecchio Museum in Verona, the work reflects Bellini's role as the bridge between the International Gothic and early Renaissance in Venetian painting, training both his sons Giovanni and Gentile. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The panel combines Bellini's characteristic interest in elaborate landscape settings with the devotional intensity of the penitent Jerome subject, showing the linear elegance and decorative detail of his mature style.
