Disputation with the Doctors
Historical Context
This Disputation with the Doctors panel depicts the twelve-year-old Christ debating with scholars in the Temple, part of the infancy narrative cycle from the reverse of Duccio's Maestà altarpiece (1308–1311). The scene allowed Duccio to display his skill at rendering architectural interiors and animated figure groups engaged in intellectual discourse. Now in the Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana del Duomo, Siena, it illustrates the narrative ambition and compositional ingenuity that made the Maestà the supreme achievement of early Italian Gothic painting.
Technical Analysis
Egg tempera on gold-ground panel with an architectural setting rendered in careful perspective, showing Duccio's interest in spatial illusion. The figures are arranged in a semicircle around the young Christ, with varied gestures and expressions conveying the drama of theological debate.
