John the Evangelist by Pontormo

John the Evangelist

Pontormo·1527

Historical Context

John the Evangelist by Pontormo, painted around 1527, pairs with the Luke panel as part of what may have been a larger altarpiece. The beloved disciple, traditionally shown as a youthful figure, allowed Pontormo to depict idealized male beauty while conveying the visionary intensity associated with the author of the Apocalypse. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays acid, dissonant colors—pinks, pale greens, glacial blues—compressed spatial arrangements, figures with an almost neurotic psychological intensity, anti-classical tension in every line.

Technical Analysis

The youthful evangelist is rendered with Pontormo's characteristic combination of physical beauty and spiritual intensity. His high-keyed palette and tense, alert figure treatment create an image of visionary contemplation.
