Infanta Margarita Teresa in a Pink Dress
Historical Context
This portrait of Infanta Margarita Teresa in a pink dress from 1665 is attributed to Juan Bautista Martínez del Mazo, Velázquez's son-in-law and successor as court painter after the master's death in 1660. The portrait continues the series documenting the young princess's growth for the Austrian court, where she was betrothed to Emperor Leopold I. Del Mazo faithfully carried on Velázquez's portrait conventions while lacking the older master's extraordinary painterly subtlety.
Technical Analysis
The composition follows the Velázquez template for royal child portraits, with the standing figure in elaborate court dress against a dark background. Del Mazo's technique is competent but more precise and less fluid than Velázquez's characteristic loose handling.
