The Surrender of Breda
Diego Velázquez·1634
Historical Context
Velázquez's masterpiece "The Surrender of Breda" (1634-1635) depicts the 1625 handover of the Dutch city of Breda to the Spanish general Ambrosio Spínola. Painted for the Hall of Realms in the Buen Retiro Palace, it was the largest of twelve battle paintings commemorating Spanish military victories. The magnanimous gesture of Spínola receiving the keys without humiliating the defeated Dutch commander Justin of Nassau has made it an icon of military honor.
Technical Analysis
The monumental canvas (307 x 367 cm) balances the two opposing armies through the famous "forest of lances" on the Spanish side, while the atmospheric landscape and varied portrait heads demonstrate Velázquez's compositional and observational mastery.
