The Angora Cat
Historical Context
The Angora Cat at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum depicts one of the luxury pets that populated French aristocratic households. Long-haired Angora cats, imported from Turkey, were prized status symbols in eighteenth-century France, and Fragonard captures the animal with characteristic charm. The bravura brushwork—rapid, swirling strokes building luminous effects—was applied alla prima onto canvas primed with warm ochre grounds, a technique Fragonard developed after studying Tiepolo in Venice.
Technical Analysis
The cat's fluffy white fur provides an opportunity for virtuoso brushwork, with Fragonard rendering the soft textures through layered, directional strokes. The animal's alert expression is captured with observational precision.
