Last Judgement
Michael Wolgemut·1490
Historical Context
Michael Wolgemut was the leading painter of Nuremberg before Dürer, running the city's largest workshop and producing altarpieces, portraits, and the woodcuts for Schedel's Nuremberg Chronicle. This Last Judgement was created around 1490 and is now held at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
