miracolo di sant'eligio
Historical Context
Niccolò di Pietro Gerini's Miracle of Saint Eligius (c. 1387) at the Musée du Petit Palais in Avignon depicts an episode from the life of the patron saint of goldsmiths, farriers, and metalworkers. Gerini was among the busiest painters in late Trecento Florence, fulfilling commissions from the powerful Florentine guilds (Arti) that governed the city's economic and political life. The choice of Saint Eligius suggests this panel was commissioned by the Arte dei Fabbri (blacksmiths' guild) or a related craft confraternity.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel. Gerini's narrative composition displays clear spatial organization with architectural settings framing the miracle scene, executed in his characteristic firm drawing style with bright, unmodulated colors against a gold background.
