A second Dornenkrönung panel in the Karlsruhe collection raises the question of whether the Master of the Small Passion produced two versions of the same subject within a single cycle or whether this represents a separate commission. Multiple panels with similar subjects by the same workshop are not uncommon in the period, as successful compositions were repeated for different clients. This version may differ from the other in compositional arrangement or format, reflecting variations in patron specification or workshop practice on a repeated type.

Workshop repetition of a successful composition would typically preserve the main figure groupings while varying secondary details — soldiers' postures, architectural backgrounds, or drapery colour. Any differences between the two Karlsruhe versions would be diagnostically significant for understanding how the workshop operated.
