Kardinal Mazarin (1602-1661)
Historical Context
This portrait of Cardinal Mazarin, the Italian-born chief minister who succeeded Richelieu and dominated French politics during Louis XIV's minority, dates from around 1650. Champaigne had painted Mazarin's predecessor Richelieu multiple times, and this portrait continues the artist's role as portraitist to France's most powerful political figures. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays restrained, almost penitential palette, penetrating psychological realism in portraiture, architectural clarity in religious compositions, complete absence of Baroque theatrical excess.
Technical Analysis
The cardinal's red robes provide the dominant color note in an otherwise restrained composition, with the face rendered with Champaigne's typical precision and psychological penetration.
