Episode uit de parabel van de Verloren Zoon: de Verloren Zoon wordt afgewezen door een rijke man
Jan de Beer·1520
Historical Context
This panel by Jan de Beer depicting an episode from the Parable of the Prodigal Son — the moment when the son is turned away by a rich man — is one of a series at the Kunstmuseum Basel narrating the entire parable in sequence. The Dutch title identifies it as the scene in which the Prodigal Son is rejected by a wealthy man from whose household he seeks employment or assistance during his time of poverty. Jan de Beer treats the narrative as social comedy as much as religious allegory, with the wealthy man's household shown as a milieu of luxury and indifference that contrasts implicitly with the eventual mercy of the prodigal's father.
Technical Analysis
De Beer uses architectural space more ambitiously in this panel than in some of his contemporaries' work, with interior and exterior elements glimpsed through an arch that structures the narrative space. Costume detail remains a primary concern: the rich man and his household are given elaborate, fashionable garments that communicate their worldly status. The Prodigal Son's figure at the margin is rendered with slightly less confident color, suggesting his diminished social standing.
