Le barrage du canal du Loing à Saint-Mammès
Alfred Sisley·1884
Historical Context
This 1884 companion to the following year's barrage canvas shows the Loing canal lock at Saint-Mammes — essentially the same infrastructure viewed slightly differently or in different conditions. Sisley's practice of returning to the same site repeatedly across years and seasons mirrors the Impressionist series method and reflects his conviction that the variations of light, weather, and water level over a known site were as worthy of systematic study as any grand historical or literary subject. These canal lock paintings are among the finest examples of his mature Impressionist style.
Technical Analysis
The canal lock provides a geometric structure within the composition — straight banks, lock gates, regulated water levels — that Sisley softens through atmospheric light. The water surface is built in horizontal touches of reflected colour. The surrounding vegetation and sky complete the characteristic Sisley landscape formula.
