Stream in the Jura Mountains (The Torrent)
Gustave Courbet·1872
Historical Context
Gustave Courbet painted numerous landscapes of the Jura Mountains near his birthplace of Ornans throughout his career, and the region's rushing streams and torrents were among his most powerful subjects. Stream in the Jura Mountains (The Torrent, 1872) was painted during a difficult period — Courbet was living in exile in Switzerland following his role in the Paris Commune and had been ordered to pay for the reconstruction of the Vendôme Column. The Swiss Jura, with its waterfalls and limestone gorges, provided consolation and subject matter during these final years before his death in 1877.
Technical Analysis
Courbet builds the torrent with palette knife and brush, achieving remarkable textural density in the rushing water and mossy rock faces. His palette is dark and heavily saturated — deep greens, blacks, whites — creating a sense of immense physical force. The impasto is thick enough that the painted surface retains its own sculptural reality.
