Ecce Homo
Historical Context
The Master of the Holy Kinship the Elder painted this Ecce Homo around 1505 for the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands. This anonymous Cologne painter was the leading artistic personality in the Rhineland around 1480-1500, known for monumental altarpieces of the Holy Family. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
The Passion panel presents the suffering Christ in the warm, detailed manner of the Cologne school, with careful rendering of the physical marks of the flagellation and crown of thorns.
