Holy Family

Baldung's Holy Family from 1513 depicts the intimate grouping of Mary, Joseph, and the infant Christ in the domestic register that was central to the popular piety of the early sixteenth century, when private devotional panels for household chapels and oratories were among the most significant categories of commissioned religious art. The Holy Family subject gave painters latitude between the formal grandeur of altarpiece tradition and the intimate domesticity of the Flemish tradition that had made the subject popular north of the Alps. Baldung's treatment, painted in the year before his first major altarpiece commission, reflects his ability to modulate the expressive intensity that characterized his public devotional work toward the more gentle, intimate register appropriate to private devotional use.
