Saint Catherine
Hans Baldung Grien·1504
Historical Context
Baldung's Saint Catherine from 1504 is another early work from his Dürer period, paired with his Saint Barbara panel, depicting the learned virgin martyr who debated Christian theology with fifty pagan philosophers and converted them all before her martyrdom. Catherine of Alexandria was among the most intellectually distinguished saints of the Christian tradition, and her martyrdom by wheel—the instrument used to torture her, which miraculously shattered—gave her a distinctive attribute that made her immediately recognizable in devotional imagery. Baldung's early treatment of the subject demonstrates his formation in the precise figure drawing and attribute documentation of Dürer's workshop, while beginning to show the directness of characterization that would distinguish his mature figure work.
Technical Analysis
The early panel shows Durer's influence in the precise rendering of the saint's attributes and costume, with Baldung's emerging personal style visible in the figure's expression.
