Saint John Altarpiece: Saint Louis of Toulouse by Hans Baldung Grien

Saint John Altarpiece: Saint Louis of Toulouse

Hans Baldung Grien·1515

Historical Context

Baldung's Saint Louis of Toulouse panel from the Saint John Altarpiece of around 1515 depicts the Franciscan bishop-saint who had renounced his rights to the Kingdom of Naples to enter religious life—a subject of particular moral force in the context of the Reformation's critique of ecclesiastical wealth and ambition. Louis of Toulouse, who died at twenty-three and was canonized remarkably quickly, embodied the ideal of princely renunciation in favor of evangelical poverty that the Franciscan movement championed. Baldung's treatment gives the young saint the formal dignity of his episcopal office while conveying the spiritual conviction that distinguished his character. The altarpiece work from 1515 belongs to the productive period preceding his Freiburg Cathedral masterpiece.

Technical Analysis

The saint figure is rendered with Baldung's characteristic precision, the episcopal vestments and attributes depicted with careful attention to material textures. His distinctive color sense creates a visually striking image within the altarpiece program.
