Le Calvaire
Agnolo Gaddi·1382
Historical Context
Agnolo Gaddi was the son of Taddeo Gaddi and the last major painter of the Giottesque dynasty that had dominated Florentine art for nearly a century. This Calvary scene (Le Calvaire) at the Musée du Petit Palais reflects the Gothic tradition of depicting Christ's crucifixion as a cosmic event attended by mourning figures and angels. Agnolo's late career coincided with the beginning of the International Gothic movement, and his work increasingly incorporated the decorative elegance and fluid linearity that characterized that pan-European style.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera on gold-ground panel, the Crucifixion composition demonstrates Agnolo Gaddi's mature style with its characteristic soft modeling, pale flesh tones, and richly patterned textiles. The gold background is elaborately tooled with punchwork, reflecting the increasing decorative emphasis of late Trecento Florentine painting.
