Le Calvaire avec saint Jérôme pénitent

Marco Palmezzano painted this Calvary with Saint Jerome Penitent around 1505 for the Musee du Petit Palais in Avignon. The unusual pairing of the Crucifixion with Jerome's penitence connected the saint's self-mortification to Christ's redemptive sacrifice. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.

The panel demonstrates Palmezzano's solid Romagnol style derived from Melozzo da Forli, with clear coloring and firm figure modeling combining the Crucifixion scene with the penitent saint.
