La Vierge et l'Enfant entourés de huit anges
Tommaso del Mazza·1350
Historical Context
Tommaso del Mazza was a Florentine painter active in the circle of Orcagna and the late Giottesque tradition. This Virgin and Child surrounded by eight angels reflects the devotional panel type central to Trecento Tuscan workshops, where such images served as altarpieces for private chapels and confraternities. The composition's hierarchical arrangement, with the enthroned Madonna flanked by symmetrical angel groups, follows conventions established by Cimabue and refined through the fourteenth century.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera on a prepared wooden panel with extensive gilding. The figures display the characteristic linear elegance of late Trecento Florence, with delicate facial modeling and elaborately patterned textiles rendered through fine brushwork and tooled gold ground.
