Scènes de la Vie du Christ : La Cène.
Mariotto di Nardo·1450
Historical Context
La Cène shows Christ at table with his twelve apostles on the eve of the Passion, the moment in which he institutes the Eucharist and predicts his betrayal. For Florentine confraternities whose devotional life centred on the Eucharist, this subject held special importance, and di Nardo's cycle at the Musée du Petit Palais would have given institutional patrons a complete narrative frame for meditating on the sacrifice of the Mass. The long table format with Christ at centre and Judas isolated on the viewer's side of the table was the standard Florentine arrangement. This panel fits within the same sequential cycle as the Nativity, Flagellation, and Resurrection panels.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold leaf on panel. The long horizontal table is a compositional challenge in a small-format panel; di Nardo resolves it by compressing the apostles into close groupings, with distinguishing gestures and attributes rather than individuated faces. Judas is conventionally identifiable by his position and dark halo.
