La Présentation au Temple
Ludovico Brea·1504
Historical Context
Ludovico Brea's La Présentation au Temple, painted in 1504 and now in the Musée du Petit Palais in Avignon, depicts the ritual presentation of the infant Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem — the fulfillment of Mosaic law that also carried prophetic significance, as Simeon recognized Christ as the Messiah and prophesied Mary's future sorrow. Brea, the dominant painter of the Ligurian-Provençal region in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, produced numerous altarpieces for churches along the Riviera coast and in Provence. This panel, now in Avignon, documents the geographic reach of his workshop output and the continuing demand for his particular synthesis of Italian Renaissance structure and Northern devotional warmth.
Technical Analysis
The Temple interior provides an architectural framework in the Renaissance manner, with the ritual presentation arranged before the high priest. Brea deploys his characteristic warm palette — gold, crimson, and blue — with clear compositional organization. Figure types show his blend of Italian Renaissance modeling and Northern descriptive care.
