Marienkrönung und Anbetung des Jesuskindes
Fra Angelico·1434
Historical Context
Marienkrönung und Anbetung des Jesuskindes (Coronation of the Virgin and Adoration of the Christ Child) belongs to Fra Angelico's large body of Marian devotional painting produced primarily for Dominican patrons. The combination of the Coronation — Mary receiving her crown from Christ — with the Adoration of the newborn Christ creates a theologically rich pairing encompassing both the beginning and culmination of the Incarnation narrative. Angelico produced multiple variations on the Coronation theme throughout his career, most famously the large Coronation now in the Uffizi (c.1432).
Technical Analysis
Gold grounds and a hierarchical upper register for the Coronation contrast with the more spatially developed Adoration below. Colours are characteristically brilliant — ultramarine blues, vermilion reds, gold haloes — in the delicate, linear style of Angelico's finest workshop productions.
