La pénitence de saint Jérôme

Jan Provoost, one of the last important painters of Bruges, created this devotional saint image around 1512. The work reflects the artistic conventions and devotional culture of the High Renaissance period, when religious painting served both public worship and private contemplation across Europe. Now held at Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, it demonstrates the artist's contribution to the rich visual culture of the early sixteenth century.
