Harbour at Vlissingen

Hendrik Willem Mesdag's 'Harbour at Vlissingen' (1887) shows the prominent Dutch marine painter's engagement with one of the Netherlands' most significant port cities — Vlissingen (Flushing) on the Scheldt estuary was historically one of the most important Dutch ports, its strategic position at the mouth of the river that led to Antwerp making it a major naval and commercial center. Mesdag's engagement with this significant harbor gave his marine practice a range beyond the more peaceful North Sea coastal subjects for which he was primarily celebrated.
