Viborg Sø (Viborg Lake) sits in the middle of Jutland, adjacent to the historic cathedral city of Viborg, and was a well-known scenic site that attracted painters and tourists throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The view of this lake—its surface reflecting the Jutland sky, the surrounding terrain open and relatively flat—offered Agersnap a quintessentially Danish landscape motif. The lake's relationship to the ancient cathedral city gave the view historical and cultural depth beyond its natural appeal.
