Reclining Nude
Historical Context
A reclining nude model appears in this 1810 study, painted during Eckersberg"s early years in Copenhagen before his departure for Paris. Life studies of the nude were central to academic training, and Eckersberg"s commitment to working from the living model would become a defining aspect of his later teaching at the Copenhagen Academy. Eckersberg transformed Danish painting by insisting on direct observation as the foundation of all artistic practice. As professor at the Copenhagen Academy from 1818, he trained the core group of painters who created Denmark's Golden Age: Christen Købke, Wilhelm Marstrand, Martinus Rørbye, and many others.
Technical Analysis
The reclining pose presents the body in full extension, allowing Eckersberg to study the play of light across the figure"s entire length. The handling is precise and analytical, with flesh tones built up through careful observation of how light models the body"s surfaces. The palette is naturalistic, with the warm tones of skin dominating the composition.
