East India merchant Albrecht Ludwig Schmidt
Historical Context
The East India merchant Albrecht Ludwig Schmidt sits for this 1818 portrait at the Hirschsprung Collection in Copenhagen. Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, born in southern Jutland in 1783, studied at the Copenhagen Academy before traveling to Paris (1810-1813) where he worked under Jacques-Louis David, and then to Rome (1813-1816). He returned to Copenhagen to become professor at the Academy and the father of Danish Golden Age painting, training virtually every significant Danish artist of the next generation. Schmidt"s portrait represents the merchant class that supported Copenhagen"s cultural flourishing.
Technical Analysis
Eckersberg"s portrait technique reflects his Davidian training—precise drawing, clear modeling, and a restrained palette that prioritizes accuracy of observation over decorative effect. The merchant"s features are rendered with the transparent, luminous flesh painting that Eckersberg developed from his study of natural light. The handling is smooth and controlled, with the brushwork subordinated to the creation of form through light and shadow.
