presentatio in tempio
Fra Angelico·1450
Historical Context
Presentatio in Tempio—the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple—painted around 1450 and held in the Museum of San Marco, depicts the ritual bringing of the infant Christ to the Jerusalem Temple forty days after birth, as prescribed by Mosaic law. At this presentation, the aged prophet Simeon took the child in his arms and spoke the Nunc Dimittis—'Now let your servant depart in peace'—recognising Christ as the promised Messiah. Fra Angelico's version of this scene emphasises its character as a moment of revelation and fulfilment of prophecy, consistent with his theological approach to the life of Christ.
Technical Analysis
The Temple setting gives Fra Angelico an opportunity to deploy architectural elements as a compositional framework—columns, steps, and the altar platform organising the grouped figures. His characteristic gold or light-filled backgrounds suggest sacred space without attempting literal architectural realism.
